SignED and DeliverED – Legislative Update & Bill Signing

Published on: Jun 20, 2020

On June 20, 2020, Governor DeSantis signed House Bill (HB) 37 – The School Bus Safety into law.

The bill increases the minimum civil penalties for motorists who drive improperly when buses are stopped to load and unload children. In part, it  increases the minimum civil penalty for motorists who fail to stop for school buses from $100 to $200 and would double from $200 to $400 the minimum civil penalty for motorists who pass stopped school buses on the side where children enter and exit, according to a House staff analysis.

“This bill is a step in the right direction,” House sponsor Ardian Zika, R-Land O’ Lakes, said before the House approved the measure in February. “Today, we are sending a loud and clear message that the Florida House of Representatives stands by the safety of our children and our communities.”
