Lt. Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera Celebrates Florida’s Top College Students

Tallahassee, Fla., April 10, 2015 – Lt. Governor Carlos Lopez-Cantera welcomed hundreds of the states’ top college students at the opening session of the Florida College System Student Government Association's year-end conference Wednesday night in Tallahassee.

The events are part of the Florida College System Month. Governor Rick Scott officially declared April as a time to celebrate the nation’s best college system.

The students continue their meeting today with a “Rally in Tally” and visits with lawmakers and staff. College presidents will join many of the students today for a reception celebrating the All-Florida Academic Team at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center at noon.

Lt. Governor Lopez-Cantera, a graduate of Miami Dade College said, “Governor Scott is laser-focused on making Florida the top destination in the world for jobs and opportunities. We know that a great job starts with a great education and the Governor wants to continue to make the dream of earning a college education attainable for every student.”

Florida Department of Education Commissioner Pam Stewart introduced Lopez-Cantera Wednesday night and thanked the students for their work in making Florida’s future strong.

“Our state relies on students like you who care deeply about the challenges we face. Florida needs your talent, your knowledge, and your ability to lead our children, our businesses and our communities,” said Stewart. “So many who have preceded you have made incredible impacts on the lives of those around them and I am confident you will do the same.”

The 28 colleges in the Florida College System serve more than 800,000 students – nearly 1 in 20 of all Floridians age 16 and over. Nearly 90 percent of FCS graduates are employed or continuing their education within one year of graduation and the average starting salary for a graduate with an Associate in Science degree from an FCS institution is more than $43,000.
