Commissioner Stewart Announces Madeline M. Pumariega as Florida College System Chancellor
Tallahassee, Fla., May 13, 2015 – Today, Education Commissioner Pam Stewart announced the appointment of Madeline M. Pumariega as the Florida College System (FCS) Chancellor. FCS serves more than 800,000 students at 28 colleges throughout the state. Pumariega will be in place before colleges begin their fall term.
Commissioner Pam Stewart said, “I am pleased to welcome Madeline to the Department of Education. Thanks to the hard work of our state’s college presidents, professors and students, Florida College System institutions are among the best in the nation. With Madeline’s extensive background in higher education and commitment to helping Florida’s students thrive, she is the right choice to ensure we continue in our positive direction.”
Since 2013, Madeline M. Pumariega has been serving as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Take Stock in Children, a statewide non-profit organization that aims to help at-risk youth break the cycle of poverty by completing college. Prior to her current role, Pumariega served as President of the Wolfson Campus at Miami Dade College. She was with Miami-Dade College for over a decade, serving in a number of leadership roles, including Dean of Student Services at Wolfson Campus and Dean of Students and Administrative Services at Medical Campus.
Pumariega said, “Helping Florida’s students achieve their education goals is one of my life’s greatest passions. I strongly believe that a quality education is the single most important factor to lifelong success, and I am both honored and excited to serve as the Florida College System Chancellor.”
Pumariega also serves on the board of City Year Miami and was a national Kellogg Fellow for the League for Innovation’s Expanding Leadership Diversity in Community Colleges program.
