State Board of Education Elects Marva Johnson as Chair

Tallahassee, Fla., May 20, 2015 – Today, the State Board of Education elected Marva Johnson as its next chair. She succeeds Chair Gary Chartrand who has served since 2012.  

Education Commissioner Pam Stewart said, “Marva’s commitment to Florida students makes her a valuable asset to the State Board of Education and I know she will carry that enthusiasm into this new leadership role. Gary Chartrand has dedicated a great deal of time and energy into being a great Board Chair and I am appreciative to him for his service to the students in Florida.”

Governor Rick Scott appointed Johnson for a term beginning March 26, 2014, and ending December 31, 2017. She is a corporate vice president for Bright House Networks LLC. 

Governor Rick Scott said, “I am confident Marva will be a valuable leader in our work to ensure Florida students receive a world-class education. Gary Chartrand has done a great job as chair and I appreciate all he has done to help make Florida’s education system even better for our students. Marva and Gary remain laser-focused on investing a record level of funding into our public schools, and I applaud their hard work to provide our teachers and students with the tools needed to succeed.”

State Board of Education Chair Marva Johnson said, “I am honored and humbled that my fellow board members selected me to serve as chair. Working with Gary Chartrand has been a tremendous learning experience, and I am excited for the opportunity to serve the people of Florida in this capacity.” 

In addition to serving on the State Board of Education, Johnson is active in her community. She is a member of a number of other boards, including the National Board of Women in Cable and Telecommunications, the Advisory Board for Rollins College’s Crummer Center for Leadership Development, and the African American Women Technology Caucus. She also mentors for Bright House Networks Women’s Leadership Circle. 

State Board of Education Member Gary Chartrand said, “It has been a privilege to serve as the State Board of Education Chair. Working alongside Marva, I have had the chance to witness her enthusiasm for education. She is a true champion for our state’s children and I am confident Marva will be a tremendous leader. I look forward to continuing to serve on the State Board of Education.”
