Department of Education to Provide Florida Educators with $2 Million in Professional Liability Insurance Coverage
Tallahassee, Fla., August 24, 2015 – Today, Education Commissioner Pam Stewart announced that, effective August 17, 2015, all full-time instructional personnel are automatically covered by $2 million of educator professional liability insurance.
Education Commissioner Pam Stewart said, “Our state’s educators are working hard each and every day to ensure Florida students have the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve lifelong success. They should not be distracted by the fear of financial ruin in the event of a false accusation made against them while on the job. We are pleased to offer this protection, and I commend Governor Rick Scott and the Florida Legislature for recognizing this need and allocating funding for it.”
During the 2015 Legislative Session, Governor Rick Scott and the Florida Legislature provided funding for the Department of Education to purchase professional liability insurance for all full-time instructional personnel in Florida (as defined in section 1012.01(2), Florida Statutes). This insurance will cover all costs related to providing $2 million of coverage protecting full-time instructional personnel from liability for monetary damages and costs of defense from claims made against educators in their professional capacity. Coverage is subject to standard conditions and exclusions that will be made available to the district school boards.
The Department issued an Invitation to Bid through the competitive procurement process, and Arthur J. Gallagher Risk Management Services, Inc. submitted a responsive bid at the lowest cost and was awarded the contract.
