First Lady Ann Scott and Chancellor Hershel Lyons Announce Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! Student Winners

Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, First Lady Ann Scott and Chancellor Hershel Lyons announced the winners of the eighth annual statewide Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! contest at the Museum of Florida History. The contest reflected this year’s theme, “Literacy Changes Our World,” and focused on literacy-civics school service projects. This week, First Lady Ann Scott traveled the state to highlight literacy and reading in Florida schools.

First Lady Ann Scott said, “It is so inspiring to see the thoughtfulness, creativity and generosity that our state’s students demonstrated through their literacy-civics service projects. The Museum of Florida History is a wonderful location to celebrate how literacy changes oneself and others. Surrounded by artifacts of Florida, we can all celebrate the many ways Floridians have shaped the nation and the world. I urge all Florida students and families to continue in that tradition by improving their reading skills and making a difference in their communities.”

Hershel Lyons, Chancellor of K-12 Public Schools, said, “Congratulations to all the participants of the Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! Contest. The theme, ‘Literacy Changes Our World,’ should serve as a reminder to all students and their families that improved literacy leads to academic achievement and increased career choices in the future. The quality of the students’ projects illustrates the critical thought and civic engagement that is encouraged by reading.”

Tom Delascenserie, Secretary of the Florida Lottery, said “The Florida Lottery is a committed partner in education, furthering the belief that every student should be given the opportunity to receive a world-class education, attend college and further their career goals. Since its inception, the lottery has contributed more than $28 billion dollars to Florida education, which includes helping to send more than 700,000 students to college through the Bright Futures Scholarship Program.”
