Students in Florida’s Palm Beach Region Mark Higher Performance on State Assessments

Tallahassee, Fla., June 10, 2016 – Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart today announced that students from Florida’s Palm Beach region are improving their performance on state assessments in Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Civics and U.S. History.

“Today’s results show that our focus on improved student learning is working, and I commend our state’s students, educators, parents and school administrators for their hard work throughout the 2015-16 school year,” said Commissioner Stewart. “Even with a higher bar, Florida students continued the overall trend of increased performance year over year. We are committed to ongoing collaboration with district superintendents and school leaders to maintain this momentum so that all students are prepared to succeed in the next steps of their academic journey.”

Statewide, results show that the percentage of students achieving on mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) increased overall by one percentage point, with 58 percent of students in grades 3-5 and 56 percent of students in grades 6-8 scoring Level 3 or higher. Scores were up 5 percentage points for students younger than high school age taking Algebra with 88 percent scoring Level 3 or higher in 2016. In addition, the percentage of students scoring Level 3 or higher on the Algebra 2 end-of-course assessment increased by four percentage points while English Language Arts remained steady. Student results were up 1 percentage point in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science Assessment and Biology 1).

Highlights from the Palm Beach area include:

A.D. Henderson Developmental Research School

  • Improved five percentage points in Grades 6-8 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) to 84 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up four percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) for 78 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased three percentage points in Civics to 92 percent.

Indian River County

  • Jumped ten percentage points in the number of high school students scoring Level 3 or higher in Algebra 1.
  • Moved up five percentage points in both Algebra 2 and Civics.
  • Increased four percentage points for students younger than high school age taking Algebra 1, with 85 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.

Martin County

  • Improved three percentage points in Civics, with 72 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up one percentage point in Biology 1.
  • Increased by one percentage point the percent of students younger than high school age performing in Algebra 1, with 98 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.

Okeechobee County

  • Increased ten percentage points in the percent of high school students scoring Level 3 or higher in Algebra 1.
  • Improved ten percentage points the percent of students younger than high school age performing in Algebra 1, with 89 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up six percentage points in Grades 6-8 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).

Palm Beach County

  • Improved four percentage points in Civics, with 70 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased four percentage points in Algebra 2
  • Improved three percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 93 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up three percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).

St. Lucie County

  • Increased four percentage points in both Biology 1 and Civics, with 64 percent and 65 percent of students, respectively, scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up two percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Florida Standards Assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment).
  • Improved two percentage points in Grades 6-8 English Language Arts, Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments), and Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science Assessment and Biology 1).
