Florida’s Panhandle Students Mark Higher Performance on State Assessments

Tallahassee, Fla., June 10, 2016 – Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart today announced that students from Florida’s Panhandle are improving their performance on state assessments in Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Civics and U.S. History.

“Today’s results show that our focus on improved student learning is working, and I commend our state’s students, educators, parents and school administrators for their hard work throughout the 2015-16 school year,” said Commissioner Stewart. “Even with a higher bar, Florida students continued the overall trend of increased performance year over year. We are committed to ongoing collaboration with district superintendents and school leaders to maintain this momentum so that all students are prepared to succeed in the next steps of their academic journey.”

Statewide, results show that the percentage of students achieving on mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) increased overall by one percentage point, with 58 percent of students in grades 3-5 and 56 percent of students in grades 6-8 scoring Level 3 or higher. Results were up 5 percentage points for students younger than high school age taking Algebra with 88 percent scoring Level 3 or higher in 2016. In addition, the percentage of students scoring Level 3 or higher on the Algebra 2 end-of-course assessment increased by four percentage points while English Language Arts remained steady.  Student results were up 1 percentage point in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science Assessment and Biology 1).

Highlights from Florida’s Panhandle include:

Bay County

  • Improved seven percentage points for high school students scoring Level 3 or higher in Algebra 1.
  • Moved up five percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 95 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased four percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Florida Standards Assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment).

Calhoun County

  • Increased 12 percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Improved by seven percentage points in Civics.
  • Improved two percentage points in both Grades 9-10 English Language Arts and Grade 5 Science.

Escambia County

  • Improved five percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 83 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased two percentage points in Grades 9-10 English Language Arts.

Gulf County

  • Moved up 13 percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 96 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased by eight percentage points in Grades 6-8 English Language Arts.
  • Improved by seven percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).
  • Improved by six percentage points in Grades 6-8 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).

Holmes County

  • Improved ten percentage points in Civics, with 69 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up seven percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).
  • Improved four percentage points in both Geometry and Biology 1.

Jackson County

  • Increased by eight percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 89 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Improved by five percentage points in both Algebra 2 and U.S. History
  • Moved up two percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Florida Standards Assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment).

Okaloosa County

  • Improved six percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Moved up six percentage points in Geometry.
  • Increased three percentage points in both Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) and Grade 8 Science combined (Florida Standards Assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment).

Santa Rosa County

  • Improved three percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Increased one percentage point for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 96 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up one percentage point in both Biology 1 and U.S. History.

Walton County

  • Improved seven percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Moved up five percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) and four percentage points in Grades 9-10 English Language Arts.
  • Improved by four percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 96 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.

Washington County

  • Jumped 14 percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).
  • Moved up 12 percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Improved eight percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Florida Standards Assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment) and six percent points in Grade 5 Science.
