Students in South Florida Mark Higher Performance on State Assessments

Tallahassee, Fla., June 10, 2016 – Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart today announced that students from South Florida are improving their performance on state assessments in Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Civics and U.S. History.

“Today’s results show that our focus on improved student learning is working, and I commend our state’s students, educators, parents and school administrators for their hard work throughout the 2015-16 school year,” said Commissioner Stewart. “Even with a higher bar, Florida students continued the overall trend of increased performance year over year. We are committed to ongoing collaboration with district superintendents and school leaders to maintain this momentum so that all students are prepared to succeed in the next steps of their academic journey.”

Statewide, results show that the percentage of students achieving on mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) increased overall by one percentage point, with 58 percent of students in grades 3-5 and 56 percent of students in grades 6-8 scoring Level 3 or higher. Results were up 5 percentage points for students younger than high school age taking Algebra with 88 percent scoring Level 3 or higher in 2016. In addition, the percentage of students scoring Level 3 or higher on the Algebra 2 end-of-course assessment increased by four percentage points while English Language Arts remained steady.  Student results were up 1 percentage point in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science Assessment and Biology 1).

Highlights from South Florida include:

Broward County

  • Moved up three percentage points in Civics, with 68 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Improved two percentage points in Biology 1.
  • Increased by two percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 91 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up one percentage point in Grades 3-5 English Language Arts, Algebra 2, Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments), and Grades 6-8 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).

Miami-Dade

  • Improved eight percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Moved up six percentage points for students younger than high school age in Algebra 1, with 86 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased by three percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).
  • Improved two percentage points in Civics, U.S. History and Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment).

Monroe County

  • Improved nine percentage points in Geometry, with 73 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Moved up six percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1 End-of-Course assessment).
  • Increased five percentage points in Algebra 2, with 54 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Improved by four percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).
