Southwest Florida Students Mark Higher Performance on State Assessments

Tallahassee, Fla., June 10, 2016 – Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart today announced that students in Southwest Florida are improving their performance on state assessments in Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Civics and U.S. History.

“Today’s results show that our focus on improved student learning is working, and I commend our state’s students, educators, parents and school administrators for their hard work throughout the 2015-16 school year,” said Commissioner Stewart. “Even with a higher bar, Florida students continued the overall trend of increased performance year over year. We are committed to ongoing collaboration with district superintendents and school leaders to maintain this momentum so that all students are prepared to succeed in the next steps of their academic journey.”

Statewide, results show that the percentage of students achieving on mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) increased overall by one percentage point, with 58 percent of students in grades 3-5 and 56 percent of students in grades 6-8 scoring Level 3 or higher. Results were up 5 percentage points for students younger than high school age taking Algebra with 88 percent scoring Level 3 or higher in 2016. In addition, the percentage of students scoring Level 3 or higher on the Algebra 2 end-of-course assessment increased by four percentage points while English Language Arts remained steady.  Student results were up 1 percentage point in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science Assessment and Biology 1).

Highlights from the Southwest Florida area include:

Charlotte County

  • The percent of students earning Level 3 or higher in Grade 5 Science improved to 57 percent, an increase of seven percentage points over last year.
  • Improved by five percentage points in Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments) to 62 percent scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • The percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher in Grades 3-5 English Language Arts increased by three percentage points.

Collier County

  • Increased student performance from last year on Algebra 2 by nine percentage points, with 53 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Improved by four percentage points for high school students taking Algebra 1.
  • The percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher on Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1) increased by two percentage points, as did scores for Grades 6-8 English Language Arts and Grades 3-5 Mathematics combined (Florida Standards Assessment and End-of-Course assessments).

DeSoto County

  • Improved the percent of students younger than high school age earning Level 3 or higher on Algebra 1 by 20 percentage points to 79 percent.
  • Increased by six percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Moved up five percentage points in Geometry.

Glades County

  • Jumped by 12 percentage points the percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher on Algebra 2.
  • Improved by two percentage points in Grade 8 Science combined (Statewide Science assessment and Biology 1).

Hendry County

  • Improved by 10 percentage points in Grade 5 Science to 44 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
  • Increased by nine percentage points in Algebra 2.
  • Improved the percent of students in grades 6-8 scoring Level 3 or higher on English Language Arts by five percentage points.

Lee County

  • Improved the percent of students younger than high school age earning Level 3 or higher on Algebra 1 to 89 percent, an increase of 5 percentage points.
  • Moved student performance in Algebra 2 up by one percentage point.
  • Improved by two percentage points in Civics to 65 percent of students scoring Level 3 or higher.
