More than 19,000 Floridians Share Feedback on Florida's Standards
~ Unprecedented opportunity provided by Gov. Scott's executive orders will be reviewed, presented to State Board of Education ~Tallahassee, Fla., November 1, 2013 - A month-long public review of Florida's English language arts and mathematics standards has resulted in more than 19,000 comments and suggestions from teachers, parents, administrators and the general public. Citizens were able to provide their feedback during the month of October via email, website and three public meetings.
The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) has received more than 19,000 comments and suggestions. In accordance with Governor Scott's executive order (PDF), FDOE also held three public meetings to gather input on the standards. All comments and suggestions will be reviewed and an overview will be provided to the State Board of Education at its November 19 meeting at Santa Fe College in Gainesville. Any recommendations for changes to the standards based on public input will be made at a future board meeting.
"I appreciate the incredible amount of feedback we have received and I want to thank everyone who took the time to send an email, comment on the website or attend one of the public meetings and share their suggestions," said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. "With input from so many Floridians, we can ensure these are the best standards for Florida's students."
Florida's standards, including the mathematics and English language arts standards adopted by the State Board of Education in 2010, are state-level expectations of what students should know at each grade level. Decisions about specific curriculums and instructional materials are made by local school districts and educators.
