Federal Grant Bringing $30.5 Million to Florida Colleges
Tallahassee, Fla., September 18, 2013 - Eleven Florida College System (FCS) institutions are in line to get $30.5 million in funding to prepare workers in growing industries like supply chain management and information technology. U.S. Secretary of Labor Thomas E. Perez today announced $474.5 million in grants to more than 180 colleges and universities across the country."The Florida College System plays a vital role in preparing the workforce by responding to business and industry needs," said FCS Chancellor Randy Hanna. "With $30.5 million in funding, our colleges have a tremendous opportunity to strengthen America's workforce through strong local partnerships and work-based training."
The U.S. Department of Labor selected 11 FCS institutions to receive funding in the areas of supply chain management, information technology, orthotics and prosthetics career education, and economic, workforce development and education partnerships.
- Broward College is the leader of a consortium designed to provide workers with skills necessary for entry- and middle-level employment in supply chain management. The college will receive $12.9 million.
- College of Central Florida is the leader of a consortium designed to bring information technology skills to workers in rural areas. The college will receive $3.2 million.
- Eastern Florida State College will receive $1.5 million in the area of information technology.
- Edison State College will receive $1.4 million in the area of information technology.
- Florida State College at Jacksonville will receive $1.1 million in the area of supply chain management.
- North Florida Community College will receive more than $800,000 in the area of information technology.
- Palm Beach State College will receive $1.2 million in the area of information technology. The college will also receive $1.1 million in the area of economic, workforce development and education partnerships.
- Polk State College will receive $1.6 million in the area of economic, workforce development and education partnerships.
- South Florida State College will receive $1 million in the area of information technology.
- St. Johns River State College will receive more than $900,000 in the area of information technology.
- St. Petersburg College will receive $1.5 million in the area of supply chain management. The college will receive $2 million in the area of orthotics and prosthetics career education.
Colleges will use the funding to design training programs that students can complete in two years or less. The funding will be used to build capacity and infrastructure, leverage distance learning, develop training modules that respond to business and industry needs and expand career pathways tied to high-skill jobs.
"With this funding, colleges will be more equipped to meet the needs of the ever-evolving global marketplace," said Chancellor Hanna. "I commend our colleges for their hard work in providing high-quality and affordable training for Florida's workforce."
