Florida Department of Education Thanks Teacher of the Year Partners

~ Generous sponsor contributions made for successful events ~

Tallahassee, Fla., July 12, 2013 - The 2014 Florida Department of Education/Macy's Teacher of the Year gala concluded last night with Orange County teacher Dorina Sackman taking home the top honor. The event was one of many activities that took place over the last three days designed to recognize all district winners. Thanks to the generous contributions from a host of business partners, teachers from around the state were able to take part in festivities and collaborative events to network, learn best practices and exchange ideas on current issues with colleagues and education leaders.

Governor Rick Scott said, "I applaud our education business partners for joining us in supporting Florida's best teachers. This year's event was a tribute to our teachers who inspire the next generation of Florida leaders. I join the Department of Education in thanking everyone who played a part in making this event a success."

"The Teacher of the Year celebration is about more than naming Florida's newest Teacher of the Year," said Commissioner of Education Dr. Tony Bennett. "It's also about recognizing all our district winners for the great work they do every day. The generous contributions by our business partners make an event such as this not only successful, but also memorable for everyone who attends. I can't thank them enough for their support of our teachers and education in the Sunshine State."

This year marks the 25th anniversary of Macy's sponsorship of the Teacher of the Year Program. As the principal co-sponsor, Macy's has supported the program along with the Florida Department of Education since 1988. To date, Macy's and the Macy's Foundation have contributed more than $2.5 million to teachers throughout the state.

"Macy's has been an incredible partner to education in Florida," said Commissioner Bennett. "I want to thank them for their many years of commitment to recognizing the best educators in our state. Their generosity and support has made the Florida Department of Education/Macy's Teacher of the Year gala the premier event in the nation."

The department would also like to thank the following partners of the 2014 Teacher of the Year program. These organizations were represented by top executives who expressed their appreciation and commitment to educational excellence in Florida with generous contributions that resulted in activities and gifts such as a welcome reception, teacher roundtable, technology products, finalist rings and complimentary tickets.
