Celebrate Educators during National Teacher Appreciation Week

- Unique Chance to Publicly Thank Teachers Via Twitter and Facebook -

Tallahassee, Fla., May 7, 2013 - If you can read this press release, thank a teacher! The week of May 6-10 is set aside to pay tribute to those who help educate our children in the classroom, build leadership skills and are passionate about molding future generations into successful citizens.

"Teachers are vital to the success of our education system and economy," said Governor Rick Scott. "This is a great time to thank each and every one of them for their contributions in the classroom. We are also thanking them by making sure every great teacher is rewarded with a pay increase for helping their students make learning gains."

The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) is engaging students, parents and communities this week in an effort to highlight teachers across the state. The department has created multiple icons for users to share through Twitter and Facebook that can be personalized to show thanks for a favorite teacher. Already nearly 1,000 people have shared the icon to show their appreciation this week. You can check out the icon at the FDOE's Facebook or Twitter page.

FDOE is also increasing the excitement of this week by announcing the five finalists for Florida Teacher of the Year. Each weekday a new teacher is learning he or she is one of the top educators in the state. Interviews will be held to choose the winner in June, followed by the announcement in July.

"We want to make sure Florida's top educators are recognized and rewarded for encouraging students to reach their potential," said Florida Commissioner of Education Dr. Tony Bennett. "Florida is home to some of the nation's top educators and it's great to see them honored for all of their hard work and dedication."

To show their appreciation to all teachers across the state for coming in early, working late and always putting their students' needs ahead of their own, FDOE leaders have created a partnership with an organization to offer tickets to a popular interactive event in Florida at a deeply discounted rate. The summer show is known internationally for keeping audiences' attention by wowing them with the performance of a lifetime. Keep an eye out for the much anticipated announcement later this week.
