Florida's Top Black Scholars Earn National Achievement Scholarships
Daytona Beach, Fla., April 12, 2013 - Forty-five outstanding black public high school seniors from throughout Florida are recipients of a National Achievement Scholarship. They join approximately 800 black students nationwide for the scholarships totaling more than $2 million. The awards are sponsored by grants from 34 corporate organizations and professional associations, as well as the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
"Nothing is more important than recognizing our students for their academic success," said Commissioner of Education Dr. Tony Bennett. "Florida students continue to compete with peers at all levels for college admissions and in the workforce. These students lead the pack and I commend them for their hard work and success."
Scholarship winners began the process last year as juniors by submitting an application that included their academic record, participation in school and community activities, demonstrated leadership abilities, and future educational goals. Students must also have a recommendation from a high school official, write an essay, and earn SAT scores that confirm their performance on a qualifying test. More than 160,000 students preliminarily entered the 2013 National Achievement Scholarship Program.
The National Achievement Scholarship is an academic competition established in 1964 by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation to provide recognition for outstanding black high school students from across the United States. For more information, visit National Achievement Scholarship Program.
