School Districts Team Up to Transition to Common Core
- Educators learn about moving to the new standards -
Tampa, Fla.- March 8, 2013 - The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) today hosted in Orlando one of a series of Community in Practice meetings for Florida educators to present district practices for implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). Six schools districts presented their transition plans, including Hillsborough, Lee, Manatee, Marion, Osceola and Washington.
"Our students deserve the highest quality education that will prepare them for success in life after graduation," said Commissioner of Education Dr. Tony Bennett. "The CCSS provide students the deep mastery of knowledge and skills needed for today's globally competitive workforce. It is crucial that we support our educators any way possible in making the transition to CCSS and transforming the learning and teaching experience in the classroom."
Bennett opened the day-long meeting explaining the importance of CCSS and the role FLDOE will play in the transition process. After district presentations, educators attended breakout sessions focused on curriculum development, best practices, and educator resources.
CCSS were developed by states in 2010 and adopted by more than 40 states in 2011. CCSS are internationally benchmarked standards that give students an edge in the global marketplace for jobs after graduation. CCSS will be fully implemented in all school districts across Florida during the 2014-15 school year.
