Florida Celebrates Career and Technical Education on the Hill

- Students meet at Florida's Capitol to share CTE success stories -

Tallahassee, Fla., February 14, 2013 - In recognition of Career and Technical Education (CTE) Month, students from more than 35 Florida high schools, technical centers, and state colleges gathered at the state Capitol to display the importance of career and technical education programs. The event also featured participants from the state's career and technical student organizations. The 4th Annual CTE Day on the Hill gave students the opportunity to show what they have learned in the classroom and how CTE programs are preparing them for competitive job markets.

"As a former CTE high school principal, I appreciate the opportunity for Florida's students to showcase their talents learned through successful CTE programs," said Commissioner of Education Dr. Tony Bennett. "CTE programs provide students through hands-on experiences the skills and knowledge needed to perform in highly-skilled, high wage jobs. I commend our students on their work and extend my gratitude to our legislators for hosting our talented students."

Students demonstrated their career knowledge in many areas including photojournalism, engineering, and agricultural biotechnology. The event allowed for fun participant interaction. Several digital photography students took pictures during the event, while nursing students checked participants' blood pressure. In addition to medical science and criminal justice displays, culinary students presented and served delicious cannolis, crab cakes, and chocolate-dipped strawberries, fresh from Florida.

"This event places a spotlight on Florida's CTE programs," said Career and Adult Education Chancellor Rod Duckworth. "CTE is an important component of Florida's education system in preparing students for college and careers."

Florida's career and adult education system is designed to meet the needs of students, businesses, and industries. By collaborating with public and private sectors across the state, career and adult education is working to improve Florida's workforce.
