Florida College System Trustees Convene in Tallahassee
Tallahassee, Fla., February 7, 2013 - Members of the Association of Florida Colleges' Trustees Commission - which represents trustees from the 28 Florida College System institutions - convened in Tallahassee Wednesday to prepare for the upcoming legislative session. Prior to the meeting, the trustees visited with Governor Rick Scott at the Governor's mansion.
"As stewards of the 28 colleges, boards of trustees provide the Florida College System with important perspectives, policies, and directions for the future," said Randy Hanna, chancellor of the Florida College System. "The annual trustee legislative conference in Tallahassee is one way to inform trustees about potential legislation and give them a forum to discuss topics and situations other colleges face."
Boards of trustees are charged with governing Florida College System institutions and ensuring colleges are responding to the educational needs of the communities while fulfilling their local missions. Appointed by the governor, trustees are business and community leaders who offer varied perspectives and diverse experiences to each college.
Sean Alveshire, chair of the Association of Florida Colleges' Trustees Commission and board member at Broward College said, "The Association of Florida Colleges' Trustees Commission is proud to offer support to fellow trustees in the Florida College System. Training and education is key to the development of effective boards. It is our responsibility to help guide our respective institutions in meeting the needs of our communities and getting fellow Floridians back to work."
