Central Florida School Districts Show Improvement on End-of-Course Assessments

Tallahassee, Fla., June 16, 2014 - Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart today recognized school districts in Central Florida for improved student performance on state end-of-course (EOC) assessments in Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology 1 and U.S. History.

"I am so appreciative of Florida's teachers and school leaders who have worked incredibly hard this year to improve student performance," said Commissioner Stewart. "Their increased focus and dedication will ensure Florida's students are prepared for success in college, a career and in life."

• Lake County is one of 13 Florida school districts that improved in all four assessment areas announced today, moving up seven percentage points in U.S. History and four percentage points in both Geometry and Biology 1.
• Orange County improved in three of the four assessment areas announced today, led by a seven point increase in U.S. History.
• Osceola County is also one of 13 school districts that improved in all four assessment areas announced today, jumping nine percentage points in Biology 1 and five percentage points in U.S. History.
• Seminole County joined 12 other school districts throughout Florida that improved in all four assessment areas announced today, including a six percentage point increase in U.S. History.
• Sumter County also improved in three of the four assessment areas announced today. Since last year, the district rose seven percentage points in Geometry, five percentage points in Biology 1 and four percentage points in U.S. History.

Overall, statewide student achievement improved in all of the EOC assessment areas released today. Compared to last year, students improved in U.S. History by 10 percentage points, followed by a two percentage point increase in Biology 1 and a one percentage point increase in both Algebra 1 and Geometry.

The Algebra 1 EOC was administered for the first time in spring 2011, the Biology 1 and Geometry EOCs were first administered in spring 2012 and the U.S. History EOC was administered for the first time in spring 2013. More information about EOCs can be found at Florida End-of-Course Assessments.
