Panhandle School Districts Show Improvement on End-of-Course Assessments

Tallahassee, Fla., June 16, 2014 - Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart today recognized school districts in Florida's Panhandle for improved student performance on state end-of-course (EOC) assessments in Algebra 1, Geometry, Biology 1 and U.S. History.

"I am so appreciative of Florida's teachers and school leaders who have worked incredibly hard this year to improve student performance," said Commissioner Stewart. "Their increased focus and dedication will ensure Florida's students are prepared for success in college, a career and in life."

• Bay County improved in three of four assessment areas announced today, including a six percentage point increase in Biology 1.
• Calhoun County improved in three of four assessment areas announced today, rising 23 percentage points in U.S. History and seven percentage points in Algebra 1.
• Escambia County improved from 2013 in two of the four assessment areas announced today, including a five percentage point increase in U.S. History.
• Gulf County improved in three of four assessment areas announced today, including a 10 percentage point increase in both Geometry and U.S. History and a six percentage point increase in Algebra 1.
• Jackson County improved in three of the four assessment areas announced today, moving up eight percentage points in Algebra 1, seven percentage points in U.S. History and six percentage points in Biology 1.
• Santa Rosa County also improved in three of the four assessment areas announced today, including a 12 percentage point increase in Algebra 1.
• Walton County improved in all four assessment areas announced today, jumping 24 percentage points in Geometry, followed by a 13 percentage point increase in U.S. History, a six percentage point gain in Biology 1 and a four percentage point increase in Algebra 1.

Overall, statewide student achievement improved in all of the EOC assessment areas released today. Compared to last year, students improved in U.S. History by 10 percentage points, followed by a two percentage point increase in Biology 1 and a one percentage point increase in both Algebra 1 and Geometry.

The Algebra 1 EOC was administered for the first time in spring 2011, the Biology 1 and Geometry EOCs were first administered in spring 2012 and the U.S. History EOC was administered for the first time in spring 2013. More information about EOCs can be found at Florida End-of-Course Assessments.
