Fifteen Florida Colleges Eligible to Compete for Prestigious Aspen Prize
Tallahassee, Fla., January 23, 2014 - Fifteen Florida College System institutions are eligible to compete for the prestigious Aspen Prize for Community College Excellence. The Aspen Institute today identified the top 150 community colleges in the nation based on exceptional levels of student success."I am proud so many of our colleges are eligible to compete for the 2015 Aspen Prize," said Florida College System Chancellor Randy Hanna. "The Aspen Prize spotlights the excellent work being done by our colleges to ensure every student receives a high-quality education."
The Aspen Institute reviews publicly available data to determine which community colleges demonstrate student success in three areas: student persistence, completion and transfer; gains in outcomes over time; and equity in outcomes for underserved students.
The 15 Florida colleges eligible for the 2015 prize are:
- Broward College
- Chipola College
- Eastern Florida State College
- Edison State College
- Indian River State College
- Lake-Sumter State College
- Miami Dade College
- Northwest Florida State College
- Palm Beach State College
- Pasco-Hernando State College
- Santa Fe College
- South Florida State College
- State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota
- Tallahassee Community College
- Valencia College
Valencia College won the inaugural prize in 2011 and two Florida colleges - Broward College and Santa Fe College - were named to the top 10 in 2013. Winners of the 2015 Aspen Prize will be announced in early 2015.
