Florida Department of Education Completes Analysis of Public Comments on Florida Standards
~ Review of public input leads to 98 recommended changes and additions to English language arts and mathematics standards ~Tallahassee, Fla., January 13, 2014 - The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) recently completed the review and analysis of more than 19,000 comments received during last year's public review process of the Florida Standards in English language arts and mathematics. In accordance with Governor Scott's executive order (PDF, 885KB), FDOE conducted a month-long public review of the standards via three public meetings, email and website. Following the public review process, which collected more than 19,000 comments and 14-plus hours of public hearings, the department hired a third party to review and analyze the feedback received from parents, teachers, administrators and other stakeholders. The third party analysis is available here (PDF, 314KB).
FDOE and a team of experts, made up of Florida teachers and subject area experts, reviewed the third party analysis and suggested 98 changes and additions to the standards based on public input. The 98 proposed changes and additions include 46 changes to English language arts and mathematics standards and the addition of 52 calculus standards. Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart will present the recommended changes to the State Board of Education at their meeting on February 18 in Orlando. Review the recommended changes.

"With your input, we have strengthened our standards to ensure they are the best and highest standards, so that all Florida students graduate from high school prepared for success in college, career and in life."
To continue the transparent and open review process, FDOE is hosting two rule development workshops and taking comments online about the recommended changes to the standards. Comments can be submitted online. The workshops will focus on a more detailed review of the rules and recommended changes. They will be available via conference call and webinar. Details are below.

Decisions about specific curriculums and instructional materials are made by local school districts and educators.
