Statement from Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart on Miami-Dade County Schools Winning the Prestigious Broad Prize for Urban Education

"Today U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced that Florida's Miami-Dade Public School District is the winner of the 2012 Broad Prize for Urban Education. This is truly a great honor for our state and I extend my enthusiastic congratulations to the school district and to Superintendent Alberto Carvalho on winning national recognition for improving student performance and reducing the achievement gap. I commend the hard work of the dedicated educators and students in Miami-Dade who made the award possible.

"I also want to extend my congratulations to the Palm Beach County School District for being one of the finalists for the award. Florida is fortunate to have two school districts receiving national attention and I am proud of the important work being done in our state to increase student achievement."
