Florida's First Lady Kicks Off Celebrate Literacy Week Student Contest
Tallahassee, Fla., October 18, 2012 - The Florida Department of Education and Florida's First Lady Ann Scott today announced the 2013 Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! "Take the Lead and Read" Public Service Announcement (PSA) contest. The contest is geared toward getting students excited about literacy and leading others to success. Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! is a week-long celebration of reading and literacy that will take place January 14-18, 2013."The Celebrate Literacy Week PSA contest is an enjoyable and artistic way for students to express their passion for reading and literacy," said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. "I thank the First Lady and all of our partners for supporting this initiative and look forward to viewing the winning videos."
Students from Bond Elementary School and Nims Middle School in Leon County were on hand at the Governor's Mansion to help kick off the contest. After viewing last year's entries, the students were energized and ready to get their cameras rolling.
"My love for reading is something that I have carried throughout my life and shared with others," said Mrs. Scott. "This contest is a creative and fun activity for teachers, students, and parents to promote the importance of reading and literacy."
Students from elementary, middle and high schools throughout the state are eligible to participate. PSAs should be no longer than 26 seconds and must be postmarked by November 30, 2012. Winning schools will be selected and announced during Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida! in January. Sponsors for the contest include Daytona International Speedway and Scholastic Publishing.
