Florida School Districts Begin the 2012-13 School Year
- High expectations for a safe and productive school year -Tallahassee, Fla., Aug. 6, 2012 - The 2012-13 school year kicks off tomorrow in Florida with seven of the state's 67 school districts beginning classes this week. Charlotte County leads the way by opening Tuesday with Brevard, Citrus, Lee, Nassau, and Walton counties beginning Wednesday and Sumter County on Thursday. The remaining school districts will start through mid-August.
"A new school year is always exciting and brings the promise of high expectations," said Commissioner of Education Gerard Robinson. "Florida teachers and district leaders have done phenomenal work increasing student achievement and I am confident they will continue to build on that success in the coming year. My wish for the new school year is for a healthy, safe, and productive environment that gives students the opportunity to excel."

The beginning of the school year also brings a reminder of school bus safety. According to a survey conducted earlier this year, more than 21,000 motorists illegally passed stopped school buses on one day in April. By learning about and observing school bus safety laws, citizens can help keep children safe while they travel to and from school on the yellow school bus.
In an effort to help the public become more aware of school safety laws, the Florida Department of Education has compiled a variety of school safety resources and parents are encouraged to share them with their children and families. A list of school safety resources is below.
