Florida College System to Recognize Outstanding Students

- Phi Theta Kappa All-Florida Academic Team honored as College Month kicks off -

Orlando - Florida College System Month will formally kick off today with official recognition of the 2012 Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) All-Florida Academic Team by Florida College System (FCS) Chancellor Randy Hanna. The students will be honored for their outstanding academic achievements during an award ceremony at the conclusion of the FCS Council of Presidents meeting at Valencia College. This year's PTK team consists of 113 students representing Florida's 28 state colleges and one independent college.

"The Phi Theta Kappa All-Florida Academic Team represents the highest achievers of The Florida College System who have demonstrated their commitment to academic excellence as well as to their communities," said Chancellor Hanna. "We are grateful to Phi Theta Kappa and all our sponsors for the opportunity to highlight these special individuals."

The All-Florida Academic Team is composed of students nominated by their respective colleges to the All-USA Academic Team competition sponsored by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, the Association of Florida Colleges, Tate Enterprises, the Florida College System Foundation, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society for two-year colleges and USA Today. Students named to the All-Florida Academic Team are chosen based on their exceptional academic achievement, leadership and community service.

Phi Theta Kappa team members will be presented with PTK medallions and the opportunity to apply for exclusive transfer scholarships totaling more than $36 million that are offered by more than 680 senior institutions.

"Phi Theta Kappa provides an important opportunity for the development of student leadership and service in The Florida College System," said Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson. "Our colleges provide a unique atmosphere where students are challenged to excel and continue their postsecondary education. I am proud to recognize these high achieving individuals who have worked diligently to better their communities and their lives."

In nominating students for the All-Florida Academic Team, colleges considered the following criteria:

  • Participation in honors programs;
  • Membership in and awards received from academic or honors organizations;
  • Awards and honors received for academic and leadership accomplishments;
  • Academic enrichment achieved through study, internships and cultural experiences; and
  • Sharing of academic attainments, knowledge and skills through community service.
