Education 360 Series Launches with Talk about Student Growth Models
~ New video series keeps people in the loop by featuring discussions on Florida’s education reform efforts ~TALLAHASSEE – The Florida Department of Education (DOE) today announced the launch of Education 360, a new video series hosted by DOE’s Teacher Liaison Kelly Seay, which provides quick snapshots about important education reform efforts currently underway in the Sunshine State. The first episode features Duval County Public Schools Math Teacher Tamar Woodhouse-Young and Putnam County’s Associate Superintendent Sam Foerster, both members of the Race to the Top Student Growth Implementation Committee (SGIC), discussing their work to help shape Florida’s new teacher evaluation systems.
“A tremendous education reform effort is underway here in Florida, and we are excited about the great participation from educators across the state,” said Florida Commissioner of Education Dr. Eric J. Smith. “It’s important that we make sure everyone is up to speed on our progress, and this new video series helps to do that. By beginning the series with the work of our stakeholder implementation groups, we provide an informative look at how all Floridians are being represented in this effort.”
Clocking in at 20 minutes, highlights of the first Education 360 episode include a description of the SGIC, its task as it relates to the creation of a value added student growth model, the work that’s been accomplished by the group thus far, and the next steps they will take. The discussion also included the different types of sample models the SGIC has seen and the variables, such as student absenteeism, which may be included in the models.
The SGIC consists of teachers, principals, parents, teacher educators, business leaders and other education stakeholders. It was established to help inform the process of creating a value-added student growth model for school districts to use as they develop new teacher and principal evaluation systems.
