Department of Education Encourages Students to “Go Higher-Get Accepted”
~ Statewide campaign facilitates admission to Florida colleges ~TALLAHASSEE – For the fifth year in a row, the Go Higher-Get Accepted campaign has rallied Florida colleges and high schools throughout the state to give students from low-income schools the assistance they need to apply for college. As part of the campaign, high school students are encouraged to attend Go Higher-Get Accepted events being held by participating colleges and schools to learn directly from admissions coordinators about tips on college admissions, financial aid information, and general program selection at each school.
“A postsecondary degree is absolutely vital for continued success in today’s highly competitive global marketplace,” said Florida Education Commissioner Dr. Eric J. Smith. “There are simply too many students in our state who are not aware of the opportunities available to them or find the admissions process intimidating, and the Go Higher-Get Accepted campaign makes it a point to clear out these hurdles and keep them on a track to prosperity.”
Last year, the Go Higher-Get Accepted campaign drew more than 10,000 high school seniors to college-campus events from which more than 6,000 college applications were completed.
“In our first week of the campaign, PSC has visited three schools and completed applications for 150 students,” said Matina Wagner, Enrollment and Outreach Coordinator with Polk State College. “We have also introduced them to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and assisted them with applying for scholarships. This is an exciting start to our 2011 Go Higher-Get Accepted events.”
