Florida First Lady to Visit Barbara Hawkins Elementary School

Tallahassee, Fla., September 24, 2014 – Today, Florida First Lady Ann Scott will visit Barbara Hawkins Elementary School in Miami Gardens. The school was one of the top five winners of the 2014 First Lady’s Summer Literacy Adventure with more than 400 books read during the summer. The school will get 50 books for the school library.

The First Lady’s Summer Literacy Adventure challenged students to read as many books as possible during the summer break. First Lady Scott visited state parks and encouraged children to keep reading while they enjoyed the natural beauty of Florida’s state parks.

Research shows that children who do not continue reading through the summer can lose a month or more of progress made during the school year. By encouraging their children to read, parents play an important role in ensuring every child reads at or above grade level.
