Florida College System Chancellor Recognizes Innovation, Excellence

Destin, Fla., October 30, 2014 – Yesterday, Florida College System (FCS) Chancellor Randy Hanna recognized two colleges for innovation and excellence through the Chancellor’s Best Practice Awards. College of Central Florida and St. Petersburg College were both honored for programs of excellence at the Association of Florida Colleges’ 65th Annual Convention in Destin.

“The Chancellor’s Best Practice Awards allow our colleges to learn from proven strategies and give much deserved recognition to exceptional programs within the Florida College System,” said Chancellor Hanna. “Through these awards, we recognize innovative and efficient programs and strategies that help make the Florida College System a model for the nation.”

Chancellor Hanna recognized the College of Central Florida’s (CF) Dental Assisting Program Outreach Dental Clinic for addressing challenges facing the dental profession in the surrounding community through exemplary collaboration. With separate funding and staffing, CF and Marion County are working together to make a difference in the community through this program of excellence. CF was recently awarded the National Association of County and City Health Officials Model Practice Award, which was one of only 22 national Model Practice Awards for increasing access to dental health care for underserved populations.

St. Petersburg College (SPC) was distinguished for The College Experience at SPC program. The College Experience program focuses on quality progression, equity and completion and has a positive impact on student success. SPC continues to garner impressive student success trends since the inception of The College Experience and has presented this program at national conferences including Achieving the Dream and the Learner Analytic Summit.

Additional FCS institutions received recognition at the awards ceremony for their program submissions, including Chipola College’s Academic Center for Excellence: Learning Beyond the Classroom; Florida State College at Jacksonville’s Author Series Learning Community; Indian River State College’s Science Partnerships to Improve Workforce Readiness; Miami Dade College’s Three-Tiered Model of Advising and Seminole State College of Florida’s NSF Intensive Summer Program.

“I applaud these colleges for their commitment to excellence in our system,” said Chancellor Hanna. “Our colleges continue to be innovators and national leaders in higher education.”
