Assessment Standards Defined as Standard Setting Process Continues

Tallahassee, Fla., October 24, 2012 - As part of Florida's continuing transition to more rigorous standards and assessments, the Department of Education convened educator and reactor panels last month to define the new benchmarks for Geometry and Biology I End-of Course assessments and grades 5 and 8 FCAT 2.0 Science.

The educator panel met to develop descriptions of the knowledge and skills that students need in each subject and grade level and to propose achievement level scores. The reactor panel reviewed the educator panel proposals and analyzed impact data to make their own recommendations.

Following the educator and reactor panels, the department held a series of rule development workshops to get public input on the panel's recommendations. Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart will review the information and prepare a draft rule for consideration by the State Board of Education at their December 2012 meeting.

A detailed summary of the standard setting process and outcomes of the educator and reactor panels is attached. For more information, visit Standard Setting.
