Commissioner Stewart Honors Florida Businesses for their Commitment to Florida’s Students

Orlando, Fla., June 13, 2018 – Today, Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart honored nearly 50 Florida businesses from around the state with the Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award. The award recognizes businesses for their extraordinary contributions to public education in Florida.

“I am pleased to present these businesses with the Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award in appreciation of their ongoing commitment to Florida’s students,” said Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart. “Strong partnerships between the education and business communities are essential to student success, and I hope more businesses will take advantage of this mutually-beneficial opportunity.”

During the awards ceremony, Commissioner Stewart highlighted a few of the initiatives that businesses are embarking on to help Florida’s students:

  • The Anderson Columbia Company in Dixie County not only provided job opportunities and scholarships to seniors graduating from Dixie County High School, they donated land for the new Old Town Elementary School.
  • In Duval County, VyStar Credit Union established branches in five area high schools which are managed, operated and utilized by students, providing career development opportunities and teaching them the importance of financial literacy.
  • In Orange County, McCoy Federal Credit Union contributed backpacks for every student at Lancaster Elementary School, and donated gifts for each member of 120 homeless families.
  • Quantum Electrical Contractors in Flagler County established the “A Hand Up” scholarship program to help students from low income families attend college.
  • In Suwannee County, Pilgrim’s co-sponsored the Early Learning Matters program that fosters a community-wide awareness of the importance of learning and literacy among young children.
