2020 Florida Seniors

Published on: Jun 15, 2020

Even in the midst of unprecedented times, Florida Class of 2020 seniors worked to make a difference in their communities.

We asked Florida school districts to nominate seniors that are making a difference, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are so proud of our seniors and loved hearing the inspiring stories of how they have given back to their communities!

Here are just a few of the ways Florida seniors made a difference:

Hernando County senior, Thalia Doss, showed tremendous compassion during COVID-19 by creating a Kindness Calendar, helping children in her neighborhood do homework & creating videos about the importance of inclusion.

Fellow Hernando senior, Hailey Isaksen, showed compassion and kindness by connecting with her classmates and local medical professionals through written notes and letters. She’s not only worked and took dual enrollment classes, she made time to reach out to those serving their community on the frontlines.

Orange County senior, Benjamin Bosque, took it upon himself to help his neighbors with their groceries and errands so they could shelter in place safely. Fellow Orange County senior, Lucas Oswald, adjusted his Eagle Scout project to make over 200 PPE items for local frontline medical professionals in his community!

Putnam County senior, Sydney Sheffield, spent hours creating personal recordings for children celebrating their birthday in quarantine, dressed as the Disney character, Elsa!

Holmes County senior, Bailey Miller, used this challenging situation to fuel his passion for agriculture and farming by helping to produce crops that will go benefit those in need in his local community!

Duval County senior, Martin Folsom, is an incredible example of using adversity to fuel greatness. He is graduating as his class’ valedictorian despite having been in and out of homelessness multiple times. Read more about Martin and his story here: http://bit.ly/3eTTNRg.

Lake County senior, Gabriel Thornburg, gave back to his community by playing his trumpet for his neighbors each evening.

Brevard County senior, Colyn Pell, remained very active in his community during the pandemic by mentoring younger students through his church.

St. Lucie senior, Meghan Glennon, continues to serve her community during the pandemic by volunteering at her local animal shelter.

Hernando County senior, Braden Krueger, has devoted his time and ingenuity to providing people in his community with a tool to fight germs while shopping at the grocery store. He invented a “Germ Buffer,” a fabric protector that slides onto the grocery cart handle, and has a cloth exterior that can be washed and sanitized. Read more about his germ buffer here.

Flagler County senior, Katherine "Kate" O’Mahoney, continued to serve her school & community through coordinating food and clothing drives.

Special thanks to the Florida Education Foundation and Florida Lottery for partnering with us to help celebrate our Class of 2020 Seniors!
