Tallahassee, Fla., January 14, 2016 – Today, Division of Blind Services Director Robert Doyle and K-12 Public Schools Chancellor Hershel Lyons read “The Secret Code” by Dana Meachen Rau to first grade students at Kate Sullivan Elementary School in honor of Braille Literacy Month.

Following the reading, each of the students were presented with copies of their names written in Braille.

Through the Florida Department of Education’s Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services, students with visual disabilities work with ?‎teachers who are trained specifically in visual impairments to learn important skills such as reading ?Braille and how to navigate the classroom using a cane or a guide dog.

The Division of Blind Services mission is to ensure blind and visually-impaired Floridians have the necessary tools, support and opportunity to achieve success. For more information, visit http://dbs.myflorida.com/.
