~ Prestigious award celebrates academic success of minority and low-income students ~

Tallahassee, Fla., September 22, 2014 – Commissioner of Education Pam Stewart today congratulated Orange County Schools for being a co-winner of the prestigious 2014 Broad Prize for Urban Education. The award honors large urban school districts that show the greatest academic performance and improvement while reducing achievement gaps among low-income and minority students.

“I extend my enthusiastic congratulations to Orange County Schools Superintendent Dr. Barbara Jenkins and the entire school district on winning the 2014 Broad Prize for Urban Education,” said Commissioner Stewart. “The hard work of teachers and school leaders is a superb example of what can be accomplished when we focus on what is most important – academic achievement that prepares students for success in college, a career and in life.”

The Broad Prize was established in 2002 and is the largest education award in the nation given to local school districts. The $1 million prize provides scholarships of up to $20,000 for eligible seniors. Gwinnett County in Georgia was the co-winner.
